Welland still impress with further success
1:00pm Saturday 24th March 2012 in Sport
WELLAND continued to impress with a 2-0 win at Smiths Athletic thirds in Cheltenham League Division Five.
As in previous weeks, they started brightly with plenty of possession and numerous attempts on goal but failed to really trouble the home keeper.
The Welland defence generally held firm but one lapse in concentration meant goalkeeper Niall Hacking was forced to save at the striker’s feet.
The visitors got their goal 10 minutes before the break when Mark Taylor’s free-kick found Frankie Bent out wide and his deep cross was expertly headed home by Matt Tedds.
Rory Matthews went close in the second period and Ben Pearson rattled the crossbar before Lewis Dixon drove the ball home from 18 yards after another Bent assist.
Fourth-placed Welland entertain Cheltonians, who are second in the table, at 3pm in a key game towards the title race
