Golf - Jones claims a Porch Cup win over Horrobin

JUNE Jones won The Worcestershire Club’s ladies’ major winter knock-out competition in convincing style.

She defeated Mary Horrobin to claim the Porch Cup at the Malvern Wells club.

Meanwhile, lady captain Trina Cole’s team won 7-6 against vicecaptain Jan Kirkland’s side in their annual match.

A bring and buy sale then raised more than £200 for Marie Curie Cancer Care.

• Fine weather welcomed a full turn-out in the men’s Tankard Foursome Stableford, a competition started 50 years ago as part of the spring meeting. The winners with 42 points, a total rarely reached in a handicap foursome, were Paul Jones (six handicap) and Peter Basten (18).

They had a clear lead over Paul Wakeley (11) and Andy McCabe (6) and Terry Price (14) and Garnet Scott (22), who both bagged 39.

In the better-ball matchplay, Phil Shurmer (2) and Nick Smith (5), despite conceding nine strokes to Ralph Kelsall (9) and Charles Davenport (15), won on the 19th hole to reach the final.
