Football - Town finish at home in style with fine rout
8:40am Friday 4th May 2012 in Sport
MALVERN Town completed their home West Midlands League Premier Division fixtures with a fine 5-0 win over Stafford Town.
The hosts took the lead after just eight minutes when Tom Crump burst down the left flank and whipped a cross into the area for Dave Reynolds to send a looping header into the net.
Malvern continued to dominate, but they could not secure the safety of a second goal until the 33rd minute, when Reynolds weaved his way past several defenders and crossed from the by-line for Lee Hooper to slot the ball home.
Malvern started the second-half with a succession of corners, but were unable to convert any of them.
Chris Allen found Crump in some space and he passed the ball onto Reynolds who, in turn, crossed to Ryan Barry, but the resulting shot was just wide.
Ten minutes later Malvern were on the attack again as the ball was played to Reynolds, whose shot hit the crossbar. The rebound fell to Joe Leighton, but he headed straight into the arms of Stafford keeper Andy LeFeaver.
Malvern increased their lead in the 63rd minute when Reynolds’ shot was cleared off the line and the rebound fell back to him and he fired in another effort, which hit Hooper and deflected into the net.
With time added on approaching, the ball was played upfield and Barry’s tenacity facing the advancing keeper saw him take the ball past LeFeaver and he was then able to pick out Reynolds in the middle for him to grab his second goal of the contest.
Two minutes later, another ball into the Stafford area was deemed to have hit a defender’s hand and the referee awarded Malvern a penalty, which Andy Fletcher converted.
It was a very good win and an excellent way to thank Malvern’s regular fans for all of their support during the season.
