Football - Winning double sees Welland seal the title
12:50pm Friday 4th May 2012 in Sport
WELLAND completed their first season in the Cheltenham League by winning the Division Five title following victories over both Tewkesbury Town Reserves and Fintan.
Against Tewkesbury, Welland began the game at pace and Lewis Dixon finished off a fine cross by Tom Soley in the fourth minute to open the scoring.
Soon after, Ben Pearson converted a penalty awarded for a foul on Rory Mathews to make it 2-0, before Dixon then flashed in a 25-yard shot to hand Welland a 3-0 lead at half-time.
The second-half saw two more goals from Pearson from crosses by James Lush and, finally, a goal from goalkeeper Niall Hacking, who had come up and pounced in a goal-mouth melee.
That victory meant a draw against rivals Fintan would seal the title.
Welland attacked from the off and were soon a goal up when a Fintan defender turned a Pearson shot into his own net.
Soon after, Lush ran onto a flicked header from Dixon and buried the volley into the net.
Fintan pulled a goal back, though, and only fine defending from veteran Phil Leah held the wavering Welland defence together.
In the second-half, Fintan lost a player due to a second yellow card and a fine move started by Soley and Matt Tedds was finished by Dixon to seal victory and the title.
