Son wins late Dad's golf trophy

THE Worcestershire members competed in a betterball stableford for the Stan McCabe Trophy with a fitting winner.

It was claimed by the late popular member’s son Andy McCabe (6) and partner Phil Birch (7) with 45 points.

They were one ahead of Lee Whittall (8) and Tom Howells (5) and three ahead of Paul Wakely (11) and Mark Read (5).

Twelve past captains competed for the Lowe Cup which was won by Allan Davies (14) with 41 points.

Terry Smith (7) came second with 36 followed by Chris Hardy (13) with 34.

Seventy pairs from Midlands clubs competed in the Malvern Wells club’s seniors open pairs.

The visitors mastered the conditions better with West Midlands GC’s Tim Rudd (18) and Vic Pailing (10) winning with 45 stableford better-ball points off three-quarter handicap. Rob Brownslow (17) from The Vale and John Swann (5) from Droitwich Spa came second with 41 on count-back from Hagley’s John Evans (10) and Vic Webber (19).

The home club’s best pair was Paul Butler (13) and Mike Smith (24), who were seventh with 40.

􀁥 Hardy souls from the Bransford seniors section played two medal competitions despite the wet weather.

The July medal was just one division due to the wet weather and proved a close affair between Ian Hamilton and Tony Lee.

Hamilton, who had the day’s lowest gross score of 90, just edged home on countback.

Division Two: 1 Alan Wallcroft 107-24=83, 2 Martin Saunders 104-21=83, 3 Paul Edlin 108-24=84, 4 Lee Dyment 106- 22=84, 5 Brian Corfield 107-22=85, 6 Hardiman 109-22=87.

The seniors team beat Henley- in-Arden comfortably 5½-1½.

Scores (Bransford first): Wallcroft and Ferey Ghani won 1 up, Davidge and Peter Harrison halved, Atkinson and Stan Parnell won 6 and 5, Phillips and Malcolm Bradley won 8 and 6, Roy Williams and Hardiman won 3 and 2, Hamilton and Neil Sheldon won 6 and 4, Bowen and Mike Holmes lost 1 down.

They had just started their home match with Kngton when the course was hit by a severe thunderstorm.

The greens and fairways were soon awash with rainwater, causing the match to be postponed to a later date.

Greenkeeping staff have been unable to cut the rough on parts of the course but are gradually catching up when the rain relents.
