OFF-spinner Cameron Blakey is hoping to force his way back into the Worcestershire junior picture after a magnificent seven-wicket haul for Worcester Nomads.

The 15-year-old, who last played for the county at under 13s level, produced a destructive display to claim 7-23 for the Bransford side’s thirds in their Worcestershire League Division Seven eight-wicket victory against Belbroughton.

After Christian Elsden and Nic Lloyd took the first two wickets, Blakey polished off the next seven in his eight overs as Belbroughton closed on 139-9, before Nomads won in 19.2 overs.

The King’s School Worcester pupil’s heroics not only handed Nomads 20 points, to move them within seven of leaders Worcester thirds, but also earned him a £25 Fearnley Factory Shop voucher as our cricketer of the week.

Blakey paid tribute to the efforts of club coaches Malcolm Jones and Terry Birt, who have seen him progress through the junior ranks since joining from Ombersley aged 11.

“Nomads have been a great help. Malcolm and Terry have been a great inspiration for me,” Blakey said. “I would like to carry on taking wickets for the thirds and hopefully this bowling will get me back in the county side.”

His previous best figures were 5-25 but, by his own admission, he had not troubled the batsmen much this season before his stunning seven.

He said: “The first few games for Nomads were not that great, then I took a wicket and two maidens at Redditch the week before, bowled pretty tightly for my 11 overs and picked up a bit of form.

“I have been keeping the same line and length and, hopefully, it will get me wickets.”

The Leigh Sinton teenager added: “I started off in the rain and the first over wasn’t great but then it stopped raining and I picked up two wickets. I got a two-wicket maiden in my third over.

“Not many wickets had gone but, as I was bowling pretty well, I stayed to the end and ended up with seven wickets, which I was very pleased about.

“Unfortunately, there were two batsmen at the end that blocked. I could have got my eighth wicket but it was dropped at short cover, that’s one of those things. I will take seven any day.”
