BIRMINGHAM and District Premier League Division One champions Ombersley put a dent in county rivals Bromsgrove’s own promotion hopes.

The four-wicket victory saw Wellington established as favourites to join the Worcestershire side in the Premier Division next year with a crushing seven-wicket win over fellow high-fliers Wolverhampton.

A win for Wellington on Saturday at Bromsgrove will secure the second promotion place but a defeat leaves the door open for Wolverhampton if they beat relegated Shifnal.

After a breezy 56 from Worcestershire’s Alexei Kervezee, Bromsgrove’s batsmen struggled against the left-arm spin of 15-year-old Josh Haynes (4-29) and were dismissed for 152.

A mature unbeaten 63 from Josh Dell and 43 from Worcestershire’s Gareth Andrew saw Ombersley to a massive 59-point lead at the top of the table.

Wombourne are now certain to finish bottom after a two-wicket defeat to Barnards Green.

Ben Hudson (56) and Henry Bartlett (42) helped Wombourne to 165 all out with Alex Hepburn picking up 4-36. Then 46 from Alex Milton and 31 from George Rhodes set Green on their way to victory despite 4-39 from Ed Denham.

The battle to join Division Two champions Leamington Spa in Division One saw an interesting twist with third-placed Attock leap-frogging Penkridge following a one-run victory.

Basement boys Water Orton went down to a 14-run defeat at Eastnor when chasing the hosts’ total of 100.

The visitors were eyeing survival after Sukhjit Singh (4-16) and Lesroy Irish (4-28) combined to shoot out Eastnor.

But Water Orton fared worse, slumping to 86 all out with Shameer Ahmed (4-8), Atiq Ur Rehman (3-13) and Sajid Ali (3-31) the major players.

Lee Hopkins and Grant Thornton both scored 51 for Leamington, who racked up 251 all out at Worcester’s Old Elizabethans after being invited to bat.

Although Jonathan Miles hit 68, OEs’ remaining batsmen fell away to 176 all out with Mark Ashcroft taking 4-28.

There were contrasting emotions for two of the league’s oldest clubs in the Premier Division.

While West Bromwich Dartmouth clinched their first title in the top tier since 1993, fellow founder members and seven-time champions Walsall were relegated to Division One after a defeat at Shrewsbury.

Barnt Green’s eight-wicket success at relegated Himley moved them up to second in the table.

If Green win their final game at home to Herefordshire’s Brockhampton on Saturday, they will finish as runners-up.

Despite 54 from Stuart Wedge, Himley folded to 125 all out with skipper Andy Sutton taking 5-30 before Ed Pollock cracked 60 for Green.

Walmley crashed to a 99-run defeat at Brockhampton, who totalled 236-9 from their 50 overs with Joe Crichard (84) and Henry Langford (63) to the fore.

Michael Waugh (3-33), Ray Cooper (3-39) and Shozair Ali (3-49) were the best of the bowlers for Walmley, who slumped to 126 all out chasing a revised total of 226 to win after a short break for rain.

Greg Ricketts hit 35 but could not repair the damage inflicted by Jamie McIlroy (4-31).

Kidderminster Victoria leap-frogged Dorridge with a five-wicket win at the John Woolman Ground.

Michael Hill took 5-19 as Dorridge were dismissed for 166 with Andy Wing unbeaten on 47.

Craig Wood (57 not out) and Neil Pinner (33) then eased Kidderminster to victory with Nathan Myers claiming 3-42.

Unexpected defeats for Stratford and Streetly left the way open for Sutton Coldfield to clinch the Division Three title with a win against Astwood Bank.

This was duly achieved by 118 runs as Tom Eustace hit 40 for Sutton, who were restricted to 199-9 in 50 overs by Sam Thomas (3-20) and Michael Desmond (3-28).

But Dan Childs (5-25) and Lee Thomason (4-26) were even more effective as Bank slid to 81 all out, including 22 extras.
