COLWALL are among the early Worcestershire League Division One pace-setters after starting the season with two wins.

Their latest victory was achieved with a comprehensive eight-wicket success over Burghill and Tillington.

Under cloudy skies, Colwall won the toss and elected to bowl first.

Though rain threatened throughout, play started as scheduled with the hosts chasing early wickets on what appeared to be a good wicket for batting.

Mike Gooch produced a consistent line and length and beat the bat several times but an inspired spell of swing bowling from Jonathan Hunter (3-34) ripped through the top order, leaving them reeling at 81-5.

Sam Crichard bowled with control and took two wickets in what were difficult conditions for spinners.

Colwall fielded well for most of the innings with James Abel and the reliable Ben Wheeler taking fine diving catches, which helped bowl out the visitors for 130.

The Stowe Lane side’s run chase started with intent and Ben Cooke (5) looked in good touch early on but was dismissed as he appeared set to unleash on the bowlers.

Tom Coleman’s impressive start to the season continued with 68 not out, including 12 fours, supported by the ever-green Nick Panniers (30no).

Burghill and Tillington’s bowlers had no answer to the wide range of shots and the target was swiftly chased down in the 20th over.

Colwall visit Bewdley on Saturday (1pm).
