TEENAGE all-rounder Georgia Hennessy is fulfilling a childhood dream after travelling to Australia to play cricket this winter.

The talented 19-year-old from Malvern has arrived in Melbourne to link up with Box Hill Cricket Club and will be playing for their women’s team.

Hennessy is fresh from helping a star-studded Western Storm to the runners-up spot in the maiden Women’s Kia T20 Super League.

She is settling in Down Under, according to her father John, and is not due back in the UK until the end of March when she will prepare for the English summer.

Hennessy said: “I have never played in Australia before but I have played in Dubai and South Africa, so this chance is very exciting.

“Playing cricket in Australia is something I have always wanted to do but I have never really had the opportunity until now.

“The cricket will be hard-fought and competitive and it’s a really good opportunity after the fantastic experience of playing in the first women’s Super League in the UK.

“I am really excited about the beaches and the outdoor lifestyle and, while the cricket is very important and I will also be doing a level two coaching course, the social side should be great.”

Hennessy plays her domestic cricket with Warwickshire women and is looking forward to the hot conditions and bouncy pitches in Australia.

The former Worcestershire women’s all-rounder and The Chase School pupil started playing cricket at the age of nine.

She has represented England at under 19s level and plays her men’s club cricket with Malvern’s Barnards Green when available.

Hennessy played alongside — and met — some of the biggest names in women’s international cricket during the ground-breaking Women’s Super League.

The teenager went from the high of hitting the winning runs for Western Storm in the semis to the disappointment of losing by seven wickets to Southern Vipers on finals day at Chelmsford.

She said: “I played all the games for Western Storm in the competition and getting the team over the line in the semi-final was special for me and the team.

“I made some good friendships, built up new contacts and I can’t wait until the selection days for the team to come around again next year.”
