Powell eyeing more goals

LEDBURY Town are bidding to extend their free-scoring run in West Midlands Football League Division Two.

The New Street side are in scorching form, having scored 16 goals in their last three league games against Wrens Nest, Malvern Rangers and leaders Team Dudley without conceding.

They also defeated Malvern Town, who are two divisions above them, 3-0 in the Smedley Crooke Memorial Trophy first round on Tuesday.

Against Wrens Nest last weekend, Dan Herbert scored twice, while Neil Gardiner, Tom Boyle and Pat Locke netted one apiece alongside an own goal.

Manager Chris Powell, whose side are third in the table, said: “Performancewise, they are playing really well, in good form and working hard. Hopefully, we can keep this little run going.

“The best thing about it all is we are keeping clean sheets as well. We have a good run of games now where we should be picking up quite a few points.

“As long as we keep our heads on the game and our form, we could be doing very well in the league.

“Malvern are meant to be two divisions above us but we were very comfortable and it could have been more.”

Midfielder Sam Dixon remains Ledbury’s only doubt as he continues to struggle with a virus that has kept him on the sidelines for a fortnight.

In the 3-0 trophy win over Malvern, the Langland Stadium hosts, who made several changes to their team, had the best of the first quarterof- an-hour.

But Ledbury went ahead on 17 minutes when a 20-yard shot from Herbert took a nasty bounce and went over the diving keeper Jake Bobo’s hands at the near post.

The visitors then took the game to Malvern and were only denied by fine saves from Bobo until the last 20 minutes.

Gardiner ran down the left to lob the keeper and four minutes later Boyle met a right-wing cross with a tremendous header.

Ledbury host Continental Star Reserves or Knowle Reserves in the next round.

Town’s second string went out of the Herefordshire FA Burghill Cup second round with a 4-2 extra-time home defeat to Fownhope Reserves.
