Town continue goal spree
9:30am Friday 2nd November 2012 in Football
LEDBURY Town made it 28 goals in five West Midlands Football League Division Two games without conceding.
The table-toppers beat sixth-placed Penkridge Town 3-0 at New Street with Dan Herbert, Jamie Welch and Tom Boyle maintaining their stunning run.
Their second consecutive home fixture was a different encounter to the 9-0 demolition of Wolverhampton Sporting Community Reserves the previous week.
Penkridge threatened the home goal on several occasions and Ledbury struggled to open the scoring for most of the first-half.
The teams drew 4-4 earlier in the season and Ledbury went close early on when hitting the bar before Herbert was denied by a superb save.
Welch’s corner found the net on 15 minutes but was disallowed for a foul and Penkridge struck back with one effort shaving the post.
The visitors’ keeper pulled off a stop from Boyle to match his earlier effort but was finally beaten by a wellplaced Herbert header which broke the deadlock.
Ledbury nearly got a second before half-time when Welch was just unable to beat the keeper to the ball.
A dangerous strike from Penkridge early in the second period was well stopped by quick-witted keeper Nicholas Blakeway.
The Staffordshire side saw a header ruled out for a foul but Ledbury took over again with Herbert twice going close before Welch nodded in the second on 70 minutes.
A jubilant home crowd did not have to wait long for a third as Boyle netted with 15 minutes remaining. Ledbury’s fifth consecutive victory sets them up for tomorrow’s encounter at bottom- of-the-table Malvern Town Reserves at the Langland Stadium (2pm).
They host Fownhope in the Herefordshire FA Challenge Cup quarter-finals next Tuesday (7.30pm).
Patrick Gibbs and Stuart Hall were on target as Newent Town beat Broadwell Reserves 2-0 in the JO Roberts Cup second round at Wildsmith Meadow.
James Hale, Andrew Jones and Scott Morgan guided the reserves to an impressive 3-0 triumph at Newnham United in North Gloucestershire Association League Division One.
Newent’s ‘A’ team won 4-2 at Ruardean United in the Gloucestershire FA Primary (North) Cup.
