UPTON Town drew 1-1 with Hanley Swan in a Cheltenham Association Football League Division One derby.

It was a frustrating but creditable midweek draw for an under-strength Town side.

Upton started brightly with Matt Hindmarsh going close after spotting the keeper off his line.

But Hanley took the lead against the run of play when a free-kick was bundled in by Cathal McTernan.

The visitors had a strong spell after missing a couple of chances.

However, Hindmarsh came close again when he beat his man to go through one-on-one only to place the ball wide.

Town dominated the latter stages of the first-half before a floated ball in by Luke Kitchen nestled into the bottom corner.

There was not much to note in the second period with the light fading.

The only chance came when Tom Crump ran through one-on-one but was denied by a fine double save from the Hanley keeper.

Upton also drew 1-1 at Kings last weekend after being denied by a late goal.

The visitors played good football throughout but a lack of quality up front proved costly. In an end-to-end first-half, Kings’ direct play going downhill looked dangerous but Chris Darby was on form in Town’s goal.

The second period saw Town dominate and dictate the play, taking a deserved lead on the hour mark.

Substitute Luan Gashi played in makeshift winger Ryan Upfield, who curled the ball into the top corner from 15 yards.

Simon Craddock and Alex Jellyman both went close to extending the lead.

The misses proved costly as Kings grabbed a late leveller through Lee Burford after having a penalty appeal turned down.

Town remain unbeaten as they travel to leaders Whaddon United tomorrow (3pm).

Hanley did not have a game last weekend but visit AC Olympia tomorrow (3pm).

Welland host Gala Wilton thirds in the Junior Charity Cup tomorrow (3pm) after a 2-1 defeat at Northway when Tim Lewis scored.

Meanwhile, Newent Town returned to winning ways in Gloucestershire Northern Senior League Division One with a 4-3 win at Lydbrook Athletic.

Justin Halfpenny (2), Henry Glover and Tom Maddox scored for Newent, who visit Broadwell Amateurs in the Reg Davis Memorial Cup semi-finals tomorrow (2.30pm).
