MALVERN Town reached the Worcestershire FA Senior Urn final for the first time since 2004.

They won 5-4 on penalties at higher-ranked Alvechurch after 90 minutes had left the score at 2-2 with both sides down to 10 men.

Town started brightly at the Midland League Premier Division hosts and went ahead in the 23rd minutes with the first real attack.

Kirk Layton and Lee Hooper combined for forward Matt Turner to slot home.

Malvern increased the lead in the 42nd minute when Dave Reynolds ran down the left and fired in an effort, which Turner tapped in from five yards.

Alvechurch put Malvern under pressure in the second period and reduced the lead within five minutes through Brendan Kelly's fierce 30-yard strike.

The Lye Meadow outfit were reduced to 10 men with 15 minutes remaining when substitute Ben Markall was sent off for two yellow cards.

But Alvechurch were awarded a penalty on 85 minutes, which Gareth Evans slotted away to level the scores.

A minute later, Malvern's Layton was shown a second yellow card followed by a red for kicking the ball away when he had not heard the whistle.

The game went to penalties without any extra-time.

Alvechurch scored from their first two spot-kicks with Jamie Thomas and Hooper replying for West Midlands League Premier Division outfit Malvern.

They missed their third only for Jake Hollylee to net for Town but scored the fourth with the visitors' Jack Cullity seeing keeper Keith Rostill save his effort.

Both sides hit the target with their next penalty, as Dene Whittal-Williams was successful for Town, so the shoot-out went into sudden death.

However, Alvechurch's sixth kick went well over the bar and Turner buried his chance to book Malvern's final spot.

The final will be at Evesham United's Jubilee Stadium against Midland League Division One leaders Highgate United on Tuesday, March 31 (7.45pm).
