THE Worcestershire Golf Club’s ladies were victorious over Evesham in the Mail on Sunday inter-club knock-out first round.

Led by victorious captain June Jones in singles matchplay, they also recorded wins through Pauline Belsham and Mary Horrobin with Pat Rose and Ali Tuck completing the team of five.

A fine matchplay win was also recorded by April Wilding and Tina Jukes against a Tewkesbury Park pair in the Daily Mail Foursomes Knockout first round.

The successful results in national competitions bode well for the season ahead.

Meanwhile, the men’s ‘A’ team did not fare as well, losing 2-1 to Redditch ‘B’ in the Droitwich Shield semi-finals for winter county foursomes.

In a tight contest, home players Peter Lupino and Dave Marshall won on the 18th but Steve Lane and Phil Shurmer lost on the 18th, as did Jamie Dunster and Tom Howells on the 17th.

In club events, the ladies teed off the season with a well-supported 12-hole match between teams representing their captain Faith Tubb and her vice-captain Pam Emery-Reynolds.

Forty-four players participated in 11 matches with the lady captain’s team winning 7-4.

The latest of the popular winter mixed competitions saw an enthusiastic group take to the Malvern Wells course in a hailstorm before finishing in spring sunshine.

In the shortened 12-hole four-ball alliance with three scores counting at each, the winners on 72 points were Wilding and Andy Greene with Brenda Cox and Trevor Cox.

Liz Pool and Peter Hill with Isabel Carmichael and Charles Carmichael came second on 70.

Organisers Jenny Jones and Colin Jones, playing with Di Meakin and Paul Meakin, took third place on 69.

Twos were achieved by Simon Penrhyn, Charles Carmichael and Trevor Cox.

The Worcestershire are holding a social dinner with music tomorrow for members who have played or wish to participate in mixed events.
