THERE were two pieces of silverware up for grabs for The Worcestershire’s men.

The 18-hole competition saw 10-handicapper Clint Webb lift the Len Phipps Cup with an impressive 41 points.

He was followed home in Division One by Andy Dunster (6 handicap, 40 points) and Andrew Perkins (12-39).

Division Two was taken by Robert Merley (16-35) from James Hayburn (16-34) and Nigel Allam (13-34).

Club stalwart John Monk (19-36) led the field in Division Three ahead of Wayne Stinton (21-35) and Steve Hill (20-35).

The EW Evans Centenary Cup was awarded to the player who first reached 100 stableford points while playing in three nominated competitions, finishing with the Len Phipps Cup.

The result was a close call with Lee Whittal and Richard Sebok reaching the required mark on the 15th hole.

Whittal secured the trophy by reaching 101 points by the culmination of the hole to Sebok’s 100.

Having previously won the County Team Championships, The Worcestershire represented Worcestershire in the English Champion Club event at Trentham, Staffordshire.

Playing an individual medal format over 36 holes, with all three scores to count, the team of Steven Lane, David Marshall and Tom Howells acquitted themselves well.

They secured a creditable seventh place from an entry of 30, who were all representing their counties.

In ladies’ competitions, the Silver Division’s Jackie Marks won the 18-hole stableford with 38 points.

The Bronze Division’s Jane Poynder and Copper Division’s Julia Radley both reached 37.

Other prize winners were Betty Hakes, Barbara Teale and Doreen Hunts on 33 and Veronica Shaw on 31.

The ladies took on the seniors section in the second of their encounters this year.

Playing keenly-contested foursomes matchplay, several matches went to the 18th hole before the seniors finally prevailed, winning 3-2.

The club captain, Roger Brierly, and his partner, Mark Read, led by example when they hosted a return fixture against the Olton club. Brierly and Read won a close encounter 2&1 with the match being nip-and-tuck throughout.

The biggest margin was recorded by Pete Basten and captain elect Steve Bradshaw, who triumphed 4&3.

The Worcestershire triumphed 4-2, ensuring that, on aggregate over the two matches, they narrowly won 6½-5½.

On a fine early autumn day, a mixed team from The Worcestershire played their last match of the year with a home fixture against The Herefordshire.

With the visitors fielding many low-handicap golfers, every pair from the Malvern Wells club was in receipt of strokes.

Undaunted, the determined team put this to their advantage to secure an emphatic 8-0 home win.

The winning combinations were acting team captain Trevor Cox and his wife Brenda, Di and Jim Wilde, Elsie and Ralph Kelsall, Liz Pool and Peter Hill, Jenny and Colin Jones, April Wilding and Andy Greene, Anne and Malcolm Garner and Doreen Hunt and Mike Dobel.
