LEDBURY Amateur Boxing Club proved again to be the best in Herefordshire with a clean sweep of four wins and one technical knockout.

They joined with Hereford Lions Club to stage a successful dinner show at the city’s Shirehall.

The boxing featured 13 exciting bouts involving fighters from all over the United Kingdom, including Wales, Middlesbrough and Stoke.

Ledbury’s Wayne Lock stepped up to prove his ability against Jacob Pardon from Stoke’s Meir ABC.

The Staffordshire southpaw boasted twice the amount of experience and Lock also gave away height.

But he won in the third round by a technical knockout and claimed the shield for best Ledbury boxer on the night.

Luke Cullwick, boxing Ryan Urquant from Dyffryn ABC in North Wales, demonstrated his stamina. He boxed every round like it was his last before winning by a unanimous decision.

Kevin Florence’s opponent Morgan Guest travelled down from Middlesbrough.

Florence also gave away height but pressed on in each round to bag the win.

He took the fight by a unanimous decision and was voted the overall best boxer on the night.

Alex Florence faced international Jason Sillett, of Cardiff’s Splott ABC, and both fighters wanted to dominate the centre of the ring in a toe-to-toe match.

Relying on his fast hands and skill, Alex Florence won by a unanimous decision.

The Ledbury boxers’ hard work in the gym has paid off.

Coach Fred Florence said: “I will put any one of my boxers up against anybody in the world.

“I would like to say a big thank you to all of them for giving 110 per cent in the gym.

“If they keep on pushing forward and giving 110 per cent, great things will happen.”

The Lions raised money for the eye unit at the County Hospital on the night.

Lions member Tony Cole has held the show for 33 years with the help of the boxing club, which is run by founder Fred Florence, Helen Florence and Joe Lock, who are all volunteers.

The club are based on the Homend Trading Estate, Ledbury, and newcomers are always welcome.

The club are open on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7pm until 9pm.

Anyone interested in joining can call 01531-631879.

Fred Florence added: “We would like to say a big thank you to Malcolm Sutherland, who sponsors the boxing club, for his generosity.”
