THE Paperstation Malvern League Handicap main competition semi-finals will see Division Two teams face lower-ranked sides.

Both remaining Division One outfits lost in the last eight with Richard McKenna in top form, winning nine of his 12 singles games to guide The Scuttling Gang to victory over Manor Park Pumas.

McKenna received good support from Ray Davies and Richard Cullis, who both took games off higher-ranked opponents.

League newcomers Bromyard Hopefuls continued their fine season by toppling ex-champions Manor Park Travellers, despite Craig Preece keeping his opponents to less than three points in eight of his 12 games.

Bromyard’s Ed Tinton took a game off Martin Snee and kept it tight against Toby Wren.

David Gwilt did well to win a game against Preece and, with Tinton, only lost by six points in the doubles.

Ted Cates rolled back the years for Crackpots ‘B’ against Poolbrook Dynamos, taking games off his opponents and, with Alan Forsdike, pushing the doubles pairing of Geoff Burford and Tom James all the way.

Alan Eldridge took a game off John Phillips as did Stan Ginn against James while coming close to winning another two. The semi-final line-up was completed by Manor Park Wanderers, who won an all-Division Two encounter with YMCA Vulcans.

Richard Bennett won 11 of 12 singles games but the hard hitting of Charlie Burford and attacking Dave Bradley proved to be the difference.

Burford’s win over Mark Clinton and Bradley’s victory against Paul Egerton prevented their hosts opening up a large points gap.

In the secondary competition, Ady Marshall led the way for Ledbury Rovers with 95 points more than opponents Manor Park Crackpots in the 12 singles games and combined well with James Dance in the doubles.

Dance accumulated an advantage of 81 points and Stephen Lindner battled well for Crackpots, who could not overcome their Division One opponents.

Rovers’ semi-final opponents will be Ledbury Collection after they overcame league leaders CSSC Ramblers, who missed their number one Chris Hewitt.

Alan Salisbury, Graham Thompson and replacement Ian Backhurst battled hard with the first two picking up useful points in the doubles.

Salisbury beat Nigel Foreshew but the latter, with team-mates Patryk Kowacz and Harry Jutle, proved too consistent and overcame the handicap to advance.

Division Three’s Poolbrook Rangers did well to beat higher-ranked Upton without the need of their handicap.

Nick Haggar, Phil Smethurst and Robert Weston picked up vital points against each of their opponents.
