THE Downs Malvern pupils are celebrating after winning the Malvern Hills tag rugby tournament for the second year running.

The Colwall-based school entered two teams, Hawks and Sharks, who both shone with impressive play throughout the tournament.

Hawks won their group, despite a close encounter with Wyche ‘A’, and progressed into the trophy competition.

In the other group, Sharks came second and similarly progressed into the trophy knockout stages.

Hawks had incredibly close encounters at the quarter and semi-final stages against Somers Park ‘A’ and Martley ‘A’ respectively.

In both matches, the pendulum swung in favour of both sides and The Downs narrowly won each by one try.

Both matches were incredibly tense affairs and had spectators on the edge of their seats.

Sharks also encountered Somers Park ‘A’ in their final match and only lost 9-7 on tries, placing them sixth out of 32 teams.

Hawks went into the final against Somers Park ‘B’ and were overjoyed to come out victors 6-4 on tries.

The Downs could not single out a player of the tournament after the pupils enjoyed a successful and enjoyable afternoon.
