MALVERN’S Emily Lewis bagged a bronze medal for Great Britain at the Canoe Sprint World Cup in Duisburg, Germany.
The 22-year-old Worcester Canoe Club kayaker starred with her teammates in the K4 200 metres during only her second international senior women’s event.
Selection for the crew came after her debut at the Senior European Championships in the Czech Republic three weeks earlier, when Lewis was second in the K1 200m ‘B’ final and 11th overall.
The K1 200m event in Duisburg saw her qualify through a tough heat to make the semi-finals, before a strong race booked a place in the ‘B’ final, where she finished fourth – missing out on third by just 0.01 seconds.
However, in the K4 200m Lewis clinched her first senior women’s medal having qualified for the final through the heats.
The crew, consisting of Lewis in the front, Angela Hannah, Hayleigh Mason and Rachel Cawthorn, got off to a strong start and maintained a high stroke speed throughout the distance, finishing third against a world-class field.
Lewis said: “To come away from Duisburg with a bronze medal in only my second senior event is a great achievement.
“Competing against the very best in the world, in a sport that I love, has been a goal of mine since I first started kayaking 10 years ago.”
