MALVERN Victoria’s Emily Jones will play for the Worcestershire youth squad in the Amy Rose Bowl National Championships later this year.

The teenager is in her second season of outdoor bowling after starting the sport when she enjoyed after-school sessions at The Chase School with the Malvern Hills indoor club.

Jones joined the county youth development indoor squad and took part in the school of excellence before trying the outdoor game at Malvern Victoria.

She settled in quickly and represented the club in friendly matches and the weekly league.

The 14-year-old’s talents on the green were then noticed by one of the youth development team coaches Marie Borthwick.

Club captain Malcolm Smith said: “Em has been a great asset to the club, giving inspiration to other new members, and it is hoped she will encourage other youngsters to bowl, dispelling the age-old myth that bowls is an old man’s sport.”

President Steve Aldridge said: “What I am most proud of is the fact Emily started bowling through her own accord.

“From Emily bowling, she has introduced her dad into the sport, whereas normally it is the other way round.”

Jones was nominated for the newcomer of the year accolade at this year’s Malvern Hills District Sports Awards and finished runner-up.

Meanwhile, Malvern Victoria defeated Bromsgrove Probus comfortably in a match 92-37.

They also came away with a precious 93-78 victory at Pershore.

Malvern Town Council have resurfaced the Victoria Park Road club’s car park.

LEDBURY’S Sue Jaynes was a winner as Bowls Herefordshire held a successful ladies’ finals day at St Martins in Hereford.
The two-wood singles final saw Jaynes triumphant against Vicky Buick from Eastnor.
There was also defeat for Eastnor in the triples final against Hereford.

MANOR Park ladies continued their winning ways with a 12-shot triumph but Ledbury got their own back for a home defeat when beating the club by 38 in Malvern.
