A RECORD that has stood for 23 years was broken at the Worcester St John’s Cycling Club Ankerdine Hill climb event.

Forty riders attempted to scale the Worcestershire ascent at Knightwick, which features an average gradient of 17 per cent but tops out with three sections of over 20 per cent at its maximum difficulty.

Malvern’s Liam Killeen rode to victory in a time of two minutes 46 seconds.

The former Commonwealth and British mountain bike national champion took to a road bike to beat the previous record set by Ian Treadwell in 1992 by just a single second.

Riders from local clubs, including Worcester St John’s, VC Sevale and MCS, took on the challenge.

Leading times from Worcester St John’s riders were Phil Whitely 3m 13s, Dave Preece 3m 40s, Ed Dursley 3m 44s, Ollie Morgan 3m 50s, Rob Nichols 3m 51s, Callum Hibbert 3m 56s, Richard Graham 4m 02s, Martin Staines 4m 05s, Brandon Drinkwater 4m 13s, Simon Adcook 4m 17s, Lewis Maiden 4m 36s, Justin Barnett 4m 42s and Dave Morgan 5m 11s.
