THE Worcestershire men’s A team secured a much-needed home win over title rivals Kidderminster.

The visitors, who had started the season in great style, fielded a strong team but home advantage proved key as the Malvern Wells club triumphed 4½-1½.

Gerald Bird (handicap 6) and Paul Wakely (10) won 6&5, Dave Marshall (1) and Steve Carter (10) 2&1, Jason Allies (2) and Andy Dunster (5) 4&3 and Phil Birch (6) and Tom Howells (2) 4&2.

Skipper Andrew McCabe (4) and Bill Thomas (9) halved, while club captain Mark Read (5) and Lee Whittall (6) lost 3&2.

The Worcestershire seniors triumphed 6½-½ at home to Kington.

Les Facer and Terry Cox won 5&4, Nigel Teale and Dave Wood 3&1, Andy Peet and Mike Cawley 6&5, Roger Blackwell and Peter Kirton two-up, Phil Bayliss and Graham Hill 4&3 and James Ferguson and John Green 4&3.

Tony Ditchfield and Colin Lowe halved their match.

A side led by Read lost 4½-1½ at Ludlow. Pete Basten and Dave Turner were the only pairing to win, while Andy Dunster and Pete Jolley halved.

In club competitions, Mark Groves shot 65 nett to win The Worcestershire’s midweek medal.

The 10-handicapper took Division One ahead of Medi Gerani (14) on 68 and Clive Minett (10) on 69.

Division Two was headed by Ian Smith (18) with 67 from Mike Hill (18) on 69 and Tom Wood (21) on 70.

Tom Hurley won the nine-hole Stableford from Allan Homfray with both on 20 points.

From a small entry, John Williams and Lucy Walton won the Generation Cup with 32 points.

The Worcestershire’s ladies gathered for two three-ball alliances.

Overall winners of the nine-hole version were Ann Moody, Betty Mitchell and Kate Cross with 36 Stableford points.

The 18-hole honours went to Elsie Kelsall, Davina Taylor and Jenny Nions with 73.

First on the front six were Evelyn Hill, Liz Pool and Sandra Schofield with 26.

Kelsall, Taylor and Nions were second, also on 26.

Jill Brierly, Mary Horrobin and Ruth Scott topped the middle six rankings with 25 from Christine Goody, Jenny Musson and Pauline Savage on 24.

Goody, Musson and Savage headed the board on the last section, taking the back six with 26.

Also on 26 were Jos Penrhyn, Liz Bird and Margaret Duncan and Vanessa Chesterton, Brenda Lowe and Laura Speers.
