TALENTED Worcester fencer Abigail Watkins has received another boost with her first call-up to represent Wales as a nation.

The 15-year-old Royal Grammar School Worcester pupil will compete for the team in the Senior Five Nations in Manchester in November.

Watkins represented Wales in the Regional Senior Winton Cup this year at the University of Nottingham when the team finished fifth out of 10.

She is coached at Malvern Hills Sword Fencing Club and eyeing selection for a future Commonwealth Games.

Her father Richard said: “The competition in Manchester is a demonstration of Wales developing their younger fencers.

“Abi is ranked 54th Great Britain senior and this is likely to improve due to the 14th position she achieved in the Essex Open last month.

“With a top-30 ranking, Abi would be eligible for selection for the Welsh team for the Commonwealth Games in two years provided there are two others also in the top 20 to make up the team.”
