THE Malvern Table Tennis League held their individual championships at The Forum, Malvern Theatres.

The main singles competition was won by Sasha Grokhotov who beat Svilen Andreev over four sets.

He began hesitantly losing the first game 11-2 but found his touch in the next three games with some devastating third-ball attack.

Earlier in the senior singles, a new event for players between the ages of 18 and 40, Andreev beat Grokhotov by more or less the same margin of his defeat in the later match.

In the main doubles Andreev and Grokhotov beat Graham Thompson and Chris Hewitt in one of the day's hard-fought matches only settled 11-8 in the fifth and final game.

Ann Barnes regained her hold on the women's singles title with a convincing three-game win over Anthea Knight.

In the doubles Barnes teamed up with Liz Hallam to retain their title with an equally convincing win against Jude Tyson and Collette James.

For the mixed doubles the long-established partnership of Barnes and Nigel Foreshew regained the title they lost last year in an event they had dominated until that defeat, beating Martin and Zoe Snee in the final.

Hewitt beat Brett Brining in three straight games in the veterans' final for over 40s.

In the junior singles Dominic Weston beat Kyle Day in four games.

Both players were evenly matched in the first two games with Weston gaining the upper hand in the third and fourth to clinch the match.

The supervets event for over 60s was contested by Trevor Davies and Geoff Woodward.

Davies took the first two games but Woodward staged a brief rally to take the third 11-5 before his opponent ran out the winner in the fourth.

In the inter-divisional doubles John Stalker and Ethan Webb, after losing the first game to Weston and Neil Angell, won the next two to take the title.

Stalker was involved in both the division two events, beating Jim Ahern in four games in the singles and teaming up with Simon Claxton to record a convincing win over Stan Mason and Webb in the doubles.

In the division three competitions Matt White beat Charlie Burford in the singles in five games.

Both players were evenly matched in the first three games with White dominating the fourth and fifth to take the title.

The doubles saw Ed Palmer and Stephen Lindner, who until now had dominated the event, concede the title to White and Tim Shouler in four hard-fought sets.
