FOURTEEN-year-old Robert Wilson competed in his first rally in Anglesey.
Using his 20-year-old Nissan Micra the John Masefield High School pupil tried hard to match times with the more modern cars against older, leading junior drivers aged up to the age of 17.
Trying to negate the power differential Wilson sought to maintain momentum through the many chicanes on the course, resulting in a few bumps which his father Garry, a former rally champion, will repair.
The uneven contest was levelled when the rain came at lunchtime and the Ledbury teenager was able to set top times, beating many of the more experienced drivers.
Having managed to set times in the top five of the juniors in the later stages Wilson was well inside the top 10 when his gearbox broke in the final stage, meaning he had to coast to the finish.
Wilson looks forward to his next event in April on an airfield near Harlech in north Wales.
He is thankful for his sponsors and welcomes any other companies who can email gbw98@btinternet.com to get involved.
