YOUNG race ace Robert Wilson has secured his Championship class win in the British Junior Rally Championship.

The 14-year-old pupil at Ledbury's John Masefield High School, in his first season of driving, steered his Nissan Micra to the overall Pre-03 Championship victory with a mature drive to second in class in the latest round.

The overall championship, open to all classes of vehicle including the pre-2003 cars, has been won but the lower positions are still up for grabs with two rounds to go.

Therefore Wilson will forego his trusty Micra for the rounds and take out a newer, more competitive Peugeot 107 to try to improve his overall championship position.

The latest event at Pembrey, south Wales, involved treacherous conditions with mud on the tarmac stages, leaving the single championship slick tyres struggling for grip.

After an early spin Wilson decided to back off his usual full attack driving style and drive for the championship rather than go for outright class victory.

This mature approach netted a solid second in class, fifth overall and the Pre-03 Championship trophy.

He still set some respectable times, beating several of the more competitive Peugeot 107s and Citroen C1s with one rival car rolling and both crew escaping unscathed.

The victory comes on the back of a dire previous week which saw Wilson's support van stolen with all his rally spares and equipment inside.

But Wilson and his father Garry, a former British Rally Championship class winner, are extremely grateful for the support of the other drivers who brought additional spares and tools to help during the latest event.

The young driver is grateful for the support of Ledbury companies and is looking for a major title sponsor for next season so he can challenge for the outright championship win.
