THE Worcestershire Golf Club’s A and B teams locked horns in their annual end-of-season challenge at the Malvern Wells course.

Playing a better-ball format, each side consisted of nine pairs of players who had represented the club during the year with the winners being the team amassing the highest aggregate points.

Despite blustery conditions, the scoring was high with the best of the day coming from the A team's Andy McCabe and Ali Renton who 44 points.

The highest score for the B side was achieved by Keith Hitchcock and Ian Brazier with 40.

A team captain Steve Carter lifted the trophy as his side ran out winners by 355 points to 332.

Meanwhile, ongoing irrigation work at The Worcestershire saw the ladies’ nine-hole stableford reduced to eight, making Davina Taylor’s 20 points all the more impressive.

Returning her best score since March, she headed a strong field with Margaret Duncan returning 18 to finish second ahead of Pauline Taylor with 17.

In the 18-hole greensome, Liz Pool and Jane Tromans topped the table with 41 points.

Ladies’ captain Elsie Kelsall and Jane Poynder finished second with 40 ahead of Jill Brierly and Janet Manning-Cox on 39.

The veterans’ stableford was won well by James Noon with 44 points.

He beat runner-up John Monk and third-placed Alan Martin by two points.

A Florida scramble format was used for the first of the club’s mixed winter competitions with the winning team of Jill Piner, Julie Saunders, Will Jones and Brian Piner carding nett 64.5.

It was close for second place with Elsie Kelsall, June Jones, Ralph Kelsall and Andy Dunster returning with 66.2 to edge out Isabel Carmichael, Diane Meakin, Charles Carmichael and Paul Meakin with 66.6.

Organisers Ron and Liz Gordon came home fourth with partners Alan Smith and Joyce Duncan on 67.7.
