MALVERN cycling superstar Liam Killeen will take on some of Europe’s finest when he competes for Great Britain this weekend.
The 27-year-old will get on his bike for the GB cycling team on Sunday when he takes part in the elite men’s race at the Cross-Country Mountain Bike European Championships, held in Zoetermeer, Netherlands.
The event kicked off for Killeen last night (Thursday) when he took part in the team relay, in a team featuring u23s star David Fletcher and women’s elite rider Annie Last.
This latest event is part of a busy summer schedule for Killeen, who will then compete in the British National Championships in Peebles, Scotland, on July 19 followed by World Cup rounds five and six (both in Canada) in successive weekends from July 26.
The current Commonwealth cross-country mountain bike champion has already had a good start to the season, despite injury.
Killeen suffered a back injury during the 2008 campaign which hampered his winter training programme and early season racing which saw him miss the first two World Cup races of 2009.
But his season took an upturn in May after he responded well to treatment.
An intense two-week training session before the World Cup event in Madrid on May 23 saw Killeen post a top-20 finish in his comeback race.
This was followed by a successful June where Killeen finished first in round three of the British National Series at Margam Park in Wales and in round four of the British National Series.
