Old Boys storm back to top after huge win

IN Division One of the Malvern League, sponsored by Paperstation Ltd, Pterodactyl Old Boys returned to the top of the table following a 9-1 win over Manor Park Travellers.

Travellers got off to a good start when Martin Snee defeated Graham Collier 11-9, 11-7, 11-9 in the first game of the evening.

But after that it was all plain sailing for Old Boys with Wayne Copping and Ian Bell both unbeaten on the night.

They also took the doubles against Snee and Stewart Moss 21-19, 11-4, 11-8.

In second place are Manor Park Cavaliers who beat Broadheath Belters 8-2.

Joe and Jack Higgs were unbeaten on the night including the doubles, in which they defeated Brett Brinning and Geoff Woodward 11-5, 11-6, 11-13, 8-11, 11-9. Brining and Woodward were responsible for getting Belters’ points when they both beat Mike Keeley in four games.

Manor Park Express moved above CSSC Ramblers into third place after they defeated YMCA Vulcans 9-1.

Dave Woodyatt and Ray Page were both undefeated in their singles and the doubles.

Jim Ahern gained Vulcans consolation, with a creditable win over Pete Griffiths 11-8, 11-6, 10-12, 11-6.

In the second division, the weather played havoc with teams being able to get to venues, several fixtures have had to be postponed over the last three weeks.

But some teams have either made supreme efforts to get to matches or have been lucky with their home nights being free of snow.

Ripple and Poolbrook Rangers both only played once, but retain their positions at the top of the second division table thanks to four-point wins for them both.

Poolbrook played CSSC Nomads where five sets went to four games and two of them to five.

Dynamos played Ripple when James Mulka was the player who saved the whitewash and came close to winning another set when he lost by 9-11 in his fifth game against Peter Quy.

Maulers played three matches, two of which were draws and it was only against Manor Park Crackpots that they managed a three-point win. Over the four matches Ray Davies won nine singles, Bill Smith eight, Kevin Howard three and Don James one.

Dynamos were the other team who seemed to be able to play their matches and against X–Police and Maulers, they were indebted to John Phillips for winning all his singles and being part of successful doubles.

When they played Devils ,their best player was Collette James with three wins and a doubles victory with Charlie Burford, who also won two singles.

Ian Sage also won two singles for Dynamos. James Mulka was again the hero for Devils with two triumphs.
