THE third round of the Malvern League Handicap competition saw Division One newcomers Broadheath Belters squeeze through to the semi-final against Manor Park Maulers by just one point.
Maulers’ resistance was led by Ray Davies who beat John Stalker 11-8, 11-7, 8-11, 11-9 and took games off both Brett Brining and Geoff Woodward. The result hinged on the last game of the evening when Stalker beat Davies 11-9 to clinch a hard-fought victory.
Two teams from the top of Division One also had a close match when Ledbury Collection, with a handicap of 15 points, beat Manor Park Express by 10 points. Throughout the evening the margin between the two sides was narrow and once again the last match of the evening was critical when Collection’s Nigel Foreshew took 11 points off Dave Woodyatt in a scoreline of 11-5, 8-11, 11-5, 14-12.
Division Two leaders Ripple found Pterodactyl Old Boys hard to contain despite a handicap advantage of 195 points.
Dave White, Wayne Chopping and Ian Bell showed why the Pterodactyls are pushing hard to become Division One champions as they gained a 52-point victory.
In the secondary competition there was a cliffhanger between Division Two sides Dukes Way Dynamos and Crackpots ‘B’.
For Dynamos, John Phillips won all of his games, but it was not enough to stop the Crackpots from winning by nine points.
Crucial to the winners was the victory of Ted Cates over Charlie Burford 11-5, 11-9, 11-6, 11-1.
In Division One of the Malvern League, as sponsored by Paperstation Ltd, Pterodactyl Old Boys moved three points clear at the top following a 9-1 triumph over Crackpots ‘E’.
Dave White and Graham Collier both won all their singles, with Bell winning twice and he teamed up with White to win the doubles.
For Crackpots, Colin Dolding once again saved the whitewash by beating Bell 14-12 in the fifth and he also lost in five to White as did Dave Steen against Bell.
Moving up to third are CSSC Ramblers who beat Broadheath Belters 7-3.
Alan Salisbury won his three singles and the doubles with Graham Thompson who won twice, with Dave Hayes playing up from Division Two beating Stalker who later on in the evening had to retire hurt.
For Belters, Brining won twice and Woodward won once.
Manor Park Express are now in fourth place on games difference following a 6-4 win over Belters.
Pete Griffiths won his three singles, two of them in five games.
He teamed up with Woodyatt, who also won twice, to win a close doubles 9-11, 3-11, 11-9, 11-4, 11-6.
