Athletics round up

AROUND 900 runners aged nine to 13 braved wintry conditions in the 20th National Prep Schools’ Crosscountry Championships at Malvern College.

Teams came from as far as Kent, Cumbria, Lincolnshire and Dorset to tackle courses ranging from 1.7-kilometres to 3.2km over Wells Common and through the college campus.

Malvern Joggers ace Emma Gooderham, the reigning world 50km champion, presented the prizes. With more than 1,200 parents and teachers involved, the day was the largest in the event’s history.

Under 11s girls, individual winner: Kathleen Faes from Derwent Lodge, Kent; team competition: Cheam, Berkshire; small schools’ trophy: St Catherine’s, Surrey.

Boys, individual winner: Ben Smith from The Beacon, Buckinghamshire; team event: Rokeby, Surrey; small schools’ trophy: Tockington Manor, Bristol.

Under 13s girls, individual winner: Annabel Simpson from St Hugh’s, Oxfordshire; team competition: Bromsgrove Prep; small schools’ competition: Hanford, Dorset. Boys, individual winner: Freddie Fielding from Packwood Haugh, Shropshire; team competition: Packwood Haugh; small schools’ competition: Packwood Haugh.
