UPTON’S recent Midlands Three West (South) revival was undone by a slick Woodrush side who confirmed their top of the league status with a 36-10 win.

Going into the game, Upton were confident after recording three wins in November but they face a difficult December having to play the top three sides all before Christmas.

Despite the result, the home side were still in the game at 60 minutes with the score 14-5 to the visitors with Upton in the ascendancy but silly mistakes cost them dear.

Woodrush won the game through their slick backs and their first score came after 20 minutes when veteran full-back Steve Smart scythed through to put winger Ed Lerna in.

Upton came straight back and the forwards, led by number eight Max Macfarlane, charged downfield and were awarded a penalty 10 metres out for holding. James Gammond took a quick tap and fed Chris O’Neil who fed fellow centre Dan Keyte who dummied his way to the line.

Just before half-time Woodrush scored again when a number of missed tackles allowed the visitors to make it to Upton’s line.

Upton tried to open the game up after the interval but mistakes started to creep in and Woodrush capitalised by scoring two more tries to earn themselves the bonus point.

With the game all but lost Upton did pull another score back when the ball found blindside flanker Matt Dunwell on the wing and the teenager skipped three tackles to score.

However, Woodrush scored a fifth try to finish the game off.
