WORCESTER Warriors’ new chief executive Jim O’Toole would consider selling naming rights for the Sixways Stadium if the deal was right.

O’Toole arrived from London Irish this week and believes there’s huge potential to raise the profile of Warriors in the region.

“The naming of the stadium is part of the modern sports marketing mix,” he said.

“If some big brands with long heritage and history in their stadia have done it (sold the naming rights), why shouldn’t we?

“This stadium isn’t quite old enough to be like Anfield or Old Trafford or Welford Road.

“I would personally have no problem with it and if the right commercial proposition came along, I suspect our board would not have a problem with it."

He added: “I did my homework before I came and there are some rugby clubs who are pushing water uphill in terms of the location they are based in and it will always be a challenge for them to attract reasonable numbers of people.

“Being the premier sports brand in a city of 100,000 people gives us a real base and there’s clearly a passion for it. I think there’s a huge opportunity here.”

O’Toole also revealed he made a surprise trip to Warriors during his interview process for the chief executive role.

“I came to Worcester as a secret shopper at the Munster ‘A’ game as a punter with my wife,” he said.

“We drove up, parked, bought tickets and watched the game. I took a few notes and that was my first time here. It was part of the interview process.”
