DIRECTOR of rugby Dave Irish has pledged his future to Malvern.

Irish sees former Great Britain rugby league star Billy McGinty as having a vital role to play in Malvern’s development as coach.

Malvern host Old Coventrians at Spring Lane tomorrow (3pm) and have not given up hope of a top-three finish in Midlands Two West (South).

They have three league games remaining and are six points adrift of third-placed rivals Banbury.

“We have had some discussions about next season and are already building towards it,” said Irish.

“I have really enjoyed my first season back at Malvern and it feels like a homecoming.

“We tried to make it happen a couple of times in the past but, for one reason or another, it just wasn’t possible.”

He continued: “We knew this season was about getting some consolidation for the club and I am keen for us to finish it off well and then look forward to the next campaign.

“It has been fantastic working with Billy, who has a wealth of experience, and I see him as having a vital role as we look to get the club back to where it belongs.

“I have spoken to Billy about next season and I am hoping he will continue. It has been great to see the players smiling and enjoying themselves after a difficult couple of seasons.”

Club spokesman Peter Woods says Irish and McGinty are hugely popular with Malvern’s players.

Woods said: “Dave has definitely won over the dressing room and the players love him.

“Billy has been doing a lot of the coaching and he varies the sessions, which keeps everyone vibrant and keen.

“The boys love coming to training and that’s a wonderful thing on the cold and dark winter nights.”

Malvern secured a 25-18 win at Nuneaton Old Edwardians in their last league outing.

They will field a near full-strength squad for tomorrow’s clash at Spring Lane.

Irish said: “The only person definitely out is Stuart Clark, who got married recently and is on his honeymoon.”

Woods added: “Old Coventrians will provide tough opposition. They are an uncompromising side who will look to keep the ball tight among their forwards.

“They made it very difficult for us earlier in the season so we know it won’t be easy.”

Meanwhile, Upton, who are facing relegation from Midlands Three West (South) visit Woodrush tomorrow.
