CHARLIE Mulchrone insists Warriors could not have asked for a better warm-up ahead of their final league game of the regular Championship campaign after thumping Cornish Pirates 69-8 in Penzance on Saturday.

The scrum-half bagged a hat-trick as Warriors stacked up 10 tries and amassed 60-plus points against the Cornwall outfit for the second time this season.

And the number nine believes it was the perfect preparation for this Saturday’s clash with Bristol.

“To put 60 points on the Pirates is outstanding and gives us good momentum going into the crunch game next weekend against Bristol,” said Mulchrone.

“If we’re looking for a good set-up going into the next few weeks, we couldn’t have asked for anything more from that performance.”

Warriors found themselves 3-0 down after 11 minutes but quickly regrouped to stun the hosts and Mulchrone revealed the secret behind their mesmerising display.

“In the first 40 we were facing into the wind so we knew we had to play because kicking would be limited,” said the half-back.

“In the second-half we had the option to keep playing or looking for field position with the wind behind us, but the message was simple – to keep playing and take opportunities when we got them.

“Numbers one to 22 were outstanding. The forwards fronted up and the backs were really sharp. It was an all-round display and probably as close to an all-round team performance as we’ve had all season.”

Despite his hat-trick, the former Rotherham man remained modest after his superb showing.

He said: “I wasn’t thinking about getting a hat-trick. I was just focusing and getting on with the game. We were doing well off the restarts, looking to play and in good field position.

“It was a good 80 minutes from the team which was really pleasing.”

Mulchrone added: “There’s a lot riding on next week. It’s not just table position.”
