INSPIRED Malvern Rugby Club blew Leamington away with a 45-13 away win in Midlands Two West (South).

The sixth-placed Spring Lane side travelled to Warwickshire with a side showing seven changes from the previous week and a late call-off meant they only had two players on the bench.

But any thoughts of an end to their rich vein of form did not last long.

Even with several players forced to start in unfamiliar positions Billy McGinty's men shrugged off the setbacks with a statement of intent from the first whistle.

Malvern fielded the Leamington kick-off and Tom Hale set off on a trademark run, beating several would-be tacklers to score under the posts within 30 seconds.

Ben King made no mistake with the extra two points.

With a new-look pack featuring former colt Ben Richards at loosehead and veteran Mark Chivers at tight head Malvern's scrum was solid and gave their incisive backs a fine platform to work from.

Although the hosts pulled back three points from a penalty they had no answer to Malvern's non-stop, all-action game.

George Roberts used his speed and strength to barrel over for a score before more aggressive running from Hale saw him go over for his second try with King's sure boot adding both conversions.

A sliced clearance let Leamington briefly back in the game as they capitalised by scoring in the corner but King then kicked a penalty to make the score 24-8 at half-time.

The second half started in the same vein but this time the forwards got in on the act as the hard-working Liam Roleston grounded the ball to signal the try bonus and King kept up his 100 per cent record with the conversion.

Hale secured his hat-trick before Malvern lost number eight James Tutty with Richard Hobbs coming back on to replace him.

Leamington employed a blanket defence to stifle the room Malvern had to work with and closed the game down, playing it tight and being rewarded with a try from a rolling maul.

But the visitors had the last word as hooker Glen Potter was at the end of a slick passing move to go over for the final score with King again adding the extras.

Malvern president David Robins said: "With half the side unavailable we had to play several people out of position.

"Jack Curtis moved from flanker to centre and was solid all day while Luke Milton stood in at stand-off with Conor Giggle moving from the wing to full-back.

"However, we have a much sterner test in our penultimate match on Saturday when we welcome Spartans from Sutton Coldfield to Spring Lane (3pm).

"They currently lie third in the table with an outside chance of reaching the play-off spot so will be looking to get a result.

"They just pipped us at their place in December in a close 33-29 encounter so I think we can promise our Malvern faithful a rousing game."
