Makeshift Upton fall to defeat

UPTON’S preparations were hindered by a number of injuries and illness but they still managed to impress in a 23-14 defeat at Leamington.

The hosts took the lead in the Midlands Two West (South) fixture after running a clearance back from halfway to score an unconverted try.

But Leamington dropped the ball on Upton’s 22-metre line and left-winger Dan Aldersey raced 80 metres to score under the posts. Chris O’Neil converted to make it 7-5.

Leamington regained the lead with a penalty and they added a second before half-time to make it 11-7 at the break.

The game then turned on a strange decision as Upton seemed to win the ball fairly at the breakdown but the referee handed the home side a penalty.

This was taken quickly and ended with a converted try. Leamington added a converted third try which which gave them a 23-7 lead.

Upton hit back and skipper Matthew Cock scored under the posts with O’Neil converting.
