Upton climb to ninth

UPTON-upon-Severn climbed to their season’s highest Midlands Two West (South) position of ninth after a home 29-10 success over Kidderminster Carolians.

Upton leapfrogged KCs after their improving scrum again gave the whole team the platform to play rugby.

The front row of Rob Heeley, Liam Moloney and Russell Price dominated scrums which gave number eight Luke Boulton and scrum-half Matthew Cock plenty of ball.

The visitors opened the scoring through a Chris Pinner penalty but Upton secured their first try on 15 minutes.

After the forwards made ground through Guy Field, Rich Jeynes broke and passed for left winger Dan Aldersey, who rounded the cover defence to score in the corner.

Heeley missed the conversion but made no mistake after young openside Tom Dodge raced over.

Upton scored a third try when captain Cock dummied at the back of the ruck and powered over. Heeley kicked the extras to send them in 19-3 up at the break.

For the opening 20 minutes of the second period, Upton held out until the KCs number eight burst through and Pinner converted to make to 19-10.

Heeley extended Upton’s lead with a penalty and then a dropped KCs pass inside Upton’s half saw Jeynes set off down the wing before feeding Aldersey. He looped a delightful pass to Alex Pimlow for a converted try.
