A KEEN Much Marcle birdwatcher believes that one of the largest and most protected birds in the UK is flying over the village.
Andy Smith, writing in the parish newsletter, The Mercury, said: "I know a red kite when I see one. Those around here almost certainly came over from Rhaydaer, Powys, where there is a large resident population.
"They are large birds, with a 5 to 6 foot wingspan and talons to match."
Mr Smith added: "I must stress that they are one of the most highly protected birds in the country; best left alone."
