A NEW Archdeacon has been formally welcomed to Hereford.

The Venerable Derek Chedzey was appointed as Archdeacon of Hereford at Evensong at Hereford Cathedral on September 9.

He was also made a Prebendary alongside Team Rector for Leominster, Mike Kneen. Prebendary is an honorary title given to senior clergy in a diocese.

Hereford is the fourth diocese Canon Derek has served in, having previously served in Oxford, Exeter and Bristol.

The Bishop of Hereford, the Rt Revd Richard Frith, said: “I am delighted that Derek has joining us as Archdeacon of Hereford.

“Derek brings a strong combination of faith, wisdom, experience and enthusiasm. He is a key person who will help us live out our vision.”

Canon Derek said: “I’m thrilled take up the role of Archdeacon of Hereford and to be working with the people of the Diocese as disciples and partners in the Gospel.

“My vision is to see people come to a living faith in Jesus Christ and our churches whatever their size growing and flourishing as signs of the Kingdom and beacons in the world. I truly believe the local church is the hope of the world.”
