PEACE campaigners from Hereford boarded their own 'peace train' to campaign against nuclear weapons.

Members from Hereford Peace Council organised the demonstration by taking scheduled trains from Chester to Westminster, via Hereford and Leominster.

The activists delivered letters and petitions on their journey, calling for a ban on nuclear weapons.

The group want the UK to sign the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons, which has so far been signed by 122 countries.

The train received a warm welcome in Leominster where its arrival was greeted by the sound of bagpipes played by kilted Scotsman Murdo White.

Mayor Jenny Bartlett, rector the Rev Mike Kneen and town crier Richard Brookman were also on hand to welcome the train, along with well wishers.

Leading UK peace campaigner Rebecca Johnson held up her Nobel Peace Prize as the train doors opened.

When the train pulled into Hereford peace campaigner Sheila Milne handed over some more letters of support to fellow activist Kim Holroyd and further signatures were collected on the journey to London.

Sheila Milne said: "It's time to get peace back on track."

The peace train event took place on October 24 to coincide with United Nations Day as part of Disarmament Week.
