A HUNGRY sparrow proudly displays his catch in our Camera Club picture of the day.
"This little bird seemed to be posing for me," said photographer, Sandra Charles.
"He was sitting on a solid piece of fence and looked like he was about to have lunch."
A common sight on garden bird feeders, in towns and open countryside, the opportunistic little birds are native to most of Europe, the Mediterranean Basin and Asia, and either accidentally or intentionally introduced to other regions, the sparrow is now found on every continent except Antarctica.
However, despite claiming the top spot as the most widely distributed bird in the world, the house sparrow is now red-listed in the UK as a species of high conservation concern, as the population in rural England has halved since the mid-1970s, whilst numbers in urban areas have declined by 60 per cent.
