A HEREFORD pub has been allowed to continue as a rock venue after it invested £5,000 in an attempt to thwart noise nuisance, the Hereford Times wrote in January 1992.

Hereford City Council granted The Entertainer in Widemarsh Street a public entertainments licence - a decision originally deferred when local residents submitted a petition.

The pub won its battle for the renewal, which permits it to operate until 1am, having bricked two windows, insulated the building and installed an electronic cut-off device.

Controlled from behind the bar, the box is locked on to a sound level which the council’s environmental health department deemed acceptable.

Solicitor Tim Simmonds, representing the pub, told councillors that The Entertainer, like its name, depended upon its reputation as a music and entertainments venue.

It is “an essential element to the business”, which has a small local trade base and tends to draw customers from further afield, he said.

He agreed there had been problems with noise compaints but that these had now been overcome.

The building, which was Karlo’s in its last guise as a pub, was sold to antiques company Signature Interiors in 2012.
