LOW wages and poor transport are two big concerns in Herefordshire, according to a new report which shows the county is often not performing well in comparison with similar areas.

Road congestion and unaffordable housing are also high on the list of problems, but on the flip side people believe their communities are safe and strong.

Overall the 'Vital Signs' report on behalf of Herefordshire Community Foundation (HCF) suggests the county is lagging behind similar areas in many aspects, particularly the economy.

It's findings are based on research, national data and first person accounts.

Using a grading system of A to E, with A at the top, the county's economic performance gets the bottom E rating and the report says urgent action is required.

Low wages is one problem, but low economic output is another.

The county's arts, culture and heritage is also graded E, with concern at the level of employment in this area and access to it.

The county is also rated poorly for fairness, partly due to food and transport costs plus areas of deprivation.

Deprivation, housing affordability, road congestion and state of rivers means the county gets a D for housing and homelessness and natural environment.

In ten categories the county gets just two As, safety and community strength.

Philippa Spens, Chief Executive of HCF, said: “The findings provide pause for thought and offer a clear indication of the issues our community is facing.

"It shines a light on the concerns and fears that require attention and provides an impetus for action.

“While wonderful work by a host of community organisations is underway, there is a tremendous need in our area.

"Therefore, we want to engage the wider community – individuals and businesses - to work with us and be a part of the solution. Community philanthropy is important and can change our communities for the better.”

The report was compiled by Data Orchard CIC using open data available on public websites. A major source of information on what Herefordshire residents think and feel about the county is the 2018 Herefordshire Quality of Life survey.
