CLIMATE protestors took to the streets of Hereford again at the weekend.

Dozens of climate activists from across the county came together at the Castle Green on Saturday to join the picnic and rally organised by Herefordshire members of Extinction Rebellion.

A bright pink canoe with the words ‘Tell the Truth’ was carried through Hereford last Saturday as the protestors celebrated their part in the London action at Oxford Circus over Easter.

"The action in London changed everything," said march and rally co-ordinator Rick Guest.

"Suddenly people were willing to give up their free time, and be arrested if necessary, to bring awareness of the existential crisis facing life on earth to the wider public.

"That alongside student strikes for climate, Greta Thunberg’s visit to the UK, the screening of David Attenborough’s ‘Climate Change – The Facts’ and numerous warnings from scientists about ecological breakdown have woken people up to the mess we are in – and that we have the solutions to turn things around.

"What we need is the political will in all aspects and every level of government.

"The recent surge in support for green issues at the local elections show that the electorate are willing and ready to embrace the necessary changes. Now is the time to act."

Herefordshire’s pink canoe, named ‘Polly’, mimicked the pink boat that blocked Oxford Circus for ten days over Easter.

The canoe was named in honour of lawyer Polly Higgins who died recently, during a relentless battle to get Ecocide listed as a crime against humanity.

The group aims to highlight and keep the effects of climate change high on the agenda both for government and for the wider public.

They are campaigning to change climate policy, demanding that the government must act now to halt biodiversity loss and reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2025.

An increased police presence was in place for the duration of the rally.

A police spokesperson said: "The team have been showing a high visibility presence in Hereford today whilst Extinction Rebellion were conducting a peaceful protest in the area.

"All in good spirits and the public were pleased to engage with us."
