A 14-YEAR-OLD linguist from Ross-on-Wye has been recognised in a national competition.

Milly McIlroy took joint first place in task one of the Years 7-9 category in the Oxford German Olympiad 2019.

Milly is a pupil at Monmouth School for Girls, which impressed in the event organised annually by the Oxford German Network.

This year's theme was Tiere und Monster (Animals and Monsters) and the students had to produce a creative dialogue in German.

Fellow Monmouth student, Sophia Rose, was placed as a runner-up in the same category as Milly.

Elise Heslinga, co-ordinator of the Oxford German Network (OGN), which organised the event, said: "The girls should be very proud of their achievements, especially considering that this was one of the most widely-entered categories this year."
