A BEACON of hope for other ‘dry’ villages in Herefordshire, Dilwyn’s successful Crown Inn, the first parish council-owned pub in the county, continues to flourish with ongoing support from its stalwart Friends’ group.
Now a tenanted free house, the 17th century coaching inn remains at the heart of the parish. Since becoming a community pub over six years ago, it has received more than £13,000 from the Friends of the Crown.
Speaking on behalf of the group, John Gerrish explained: “The Friends are a small group who have raised this money to provide for the Crown what the council perhaps cannot afford to do.
“If there’s something to make things better, the Friends are willing to take it on.”
To maintain that support, the Friends organise a range of fundraising events. Among these, an annual summer concert in St Mary’s Church at Dilwyn has grown in popularity since the first in 2013.
On Saturday (June 15) at 7.30pm, well-known oboeist Ruth Watson ‘and Friends’ will be returning to Dilwyn for an evening of popular classics.
And on June 29 , Tenbury Town Band will be performing in the Crown’s pub garden from 7pm. All money raised from these events will go towards the Crown Inn Projects.
