THE prom season in Herefordshire is under way, and young people have been given 10 tips for staying safe.

They have been issued by West Mercia Police Neighbourhood Watch social media panel.

Parents can play their part too by devising an 'escape plan' with their son or daughter in which they can call to be collected from the prom. Without an escape plan, police warn, teenagers may feel pressured into getting into a car with friends even if they feel unsafe.

They should follow these 10 tips for staying safe:

• Walk in well-lit, well-used areas where there are lots of people.

• Always stay alert.

• Think about how you’ll be getting home before you go out.

• If you use a taxi make sure it is licensed. Take a picture of the taxi before you get in for your reference.

• Always carry your mobile (and make sure it is charged).

• Drink responsibly.
