While Newent in Bloom’s summer gardens competition has already been judged, there is still time for Newent residents to enter a sunflower growing competition.

Two awards will be on offer; one for the tallest sunflower and one for the most flowers on a single plant, including buds and seed heads.

The winners will be announced at Newent’s famous Onion Fayre, in the Memorial Hall at 4pm on Saturday September 14.

A spokesman said: "Just email a photo of your plant with its height or number of blooms, together with your name and address, to newentinbloom@gmail.com, or drop off a print to flat 1 Alma House, 43 Church St Newent GL18 1AA by Saturday Sept 8

"Entry is free and there are no age limits, though a child’s age would be good to know if they have grown their own sunflower."

Newent's Onion Fayre usually attracts in excess of 10,000 to the town centre, making it the market town's largest annual one day event.

This year it will have three stages for live music, fairground rides, exhibitions, lakeside events and over 150 stands with arts, crafts and plants.

There will also be dog agility demonstrations, police dogs, gun dogs and even dancing dogs.
