A MAN was arrested after his Viagra pills were mistaken for class A drugs, a court has heard.

Andrew David Williams, 31, of St Owen’s Street, Hereford, admitted possessing cannabis when he appeared before magistrates on January 29.

Prosecutor Shafquat Reaz said police had spoken to Williams while on patrol on January 8.

He surrendered the drugs to officers, who had noticed his eyes were dilated and he was unsteady on his feet.

Judith Kenney, for Williams, said that under normal circumstances, she would have expected him to have been cautioned for possessing the drugs, but that this was not what had happened.

“It would appear that this was because he was arrested for what was thought to be class A drugs,” Miss Kenney said.

“This was in fact a prescription drug, and one that you can get over the counter.

“The police then put on social media that they had recovered these drugs and then found that they were Viagra. It is of huge concern for me that he was treated in that manner.”

The court heard that the post in question did not identify Williams.

Mr Reaz said police had taken Williams into custody after he failed a drug swipe test.

Williams was handed an 8 month conditional discharge for cannabis possession and was ordered to pay costs of £183 and a £23 victim surcharge.
